Hotel Scandinavia is a three stars hotel in the beautiful Santa Maria Formosa Square, a stone's throw from St. Mark's Square.
It's an ancient Venetian palace, built around the year 1000, whose walls and foundations are from Byzantine times. According to legend, it was here that Desdemona first met the Moor Othello, during a ball.
The palace was rebuilt and given its present arrangement in the late 16th century by the Trevisan family, Venetian merchants since centuries. They lived in it until one of their last heirs married a son of the Malipiero family, a Venetian Doge.
All rooms have en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning, fridge bar, television, direct dial telephone, and hair dryer.
Many rooms have a view of the beautiful Santa Maria Formosa Square (see picture above).
Rooms and common areas of the hotel feature period furniture and original 18th-century furniture.
A summary of guests' reviews:
"Good central location; fairly quiet area; spacious clean room; excellent breakfast selection; friendly, helpful staff - would return for another stay."
"The hotel was in a great location close to St.Marc's Square and is old and charming if a tiny bit shabby. The staff were not particularly friendly but not especially rude either. They were just kind of there. We had no hot water in the shower on our second day. Otherwise, it was a nice enough place to stay."
"Very well located, just between Rialto and San Marco. Very pleasant hotel for this price category."
"Basic but clean rooms, with helpful and friendly staff and in a fantastic location, only 5 minutes walk from St Mark's Square. Excellent for people on a budget."

"We had a lovely stay at the San Zulian with the room being very comfortable and well furnished. The only downside being the noise from the church bells in the morning, but it was bearable and I would recommend it for its central location. The dining area was also too small to cope with everyone, so they brought us breakfast in our bedroom which was good when we were feeling lazy in the mornings!"

"The Ca'd'Oro was a first-rate hotel in a wonderful area of Venice. The front desk clerk took on the job of helping us with lost luggage and arranging its speedy return. Since the hotel is a bit difficult to find, I'd suggest anyone arriving at night find out exactly where it is beforehand."
"Very pleasant, not easy to find."
"It is a charming hotel, with rooms confortable and specially with a beautiful view to a clean and quite channel. With the references they give in their confirmation it is not so difficult as described to find it. I really adored it, and recommend to drink a bottle of proseco looking to the beautiful view. The room has the best air conditiones of all the hotel I satayed during this trip. really excelllent."
"Thought the property was of a very good standard."
"Really good hotel with pleasant staff."
"The hotel had clearly been renovated to a very high standard; the room was good with air con but no fridge. Bathroom was well equipped. Conveniently sited for access by water bus and on a minor canal for water taxi pickup (necessary for early flight departure: expensive, but an excellent way to finish a holiday). Breakfast was simple but adequate. Staff spoke good English and were helpful. Well sited for bars and restaurants and yet near to the non-tourist areas which have more character."

A clearer signing system would have helped us to find the main hotel and check in desk more easily on our arrival. We enjoyed our stay very much and would like to go again!"
"We stayed at the hotel for a long weekend to visit Venice. We chose this hotel as it was on the Lido and was very reasonably priced. Its location was about a 5 minute walk from the waterbus stop. The hotel was welcoming, clean as were the rooms. I would recommend the hotel to anyone."
"Better than expected from the details given. The ONLY adverse comment I could make was the noise from the adjacent rooms bathroom. The staff were very good - particularly at reception and dining room. I would certainly use this hotel again."

A summary of typical guests' reviews:
"Of course there are no automobiles in Venice, which always make a place more quiet, but this was definately the quietest hotel I have ever stayed in. The staff, Leonardo in particular, were very accomodating, with excellent English skills. Myself and my family would definately stay here again."
"This is a very nice hotel off the beaten track in Venice. It is somewhat difficult to find. We had a difficult time trying to find it from the map. But, all of Venice is hard to navigate. It is hard to take a lot of luggage as there are a couple of bridges to cross to get there and you do have to go up a flight of stairs to reach the hotel. However, the hotel itself is very nice and rooms are very spacious. We stayed at another hotel in San Marco for a night and it wasn't as nice. I would stay here again."
"Employees were very nice and quality of service was very good. Very good address."
"My best stay in Venice ever. Wonderful staff (2 brothers)who were helpful and made you feel welcome. Beautifully appointed rooms that were sparkling clean. Location was away from the tourist madness yet central. Hard to find it at first, but helpful Venetians got us there and then we quickly learned. We would definitely go back."
"Good base for walking all of Venice. Such a central location made route planning a dream. We would certainly stay again and recommend to our friends. Excellent value."

A summary of typical guests' reviews:
"Good location and comfortable place at Venice, I realy want to visit again. Also, reception members are gentle and kind, they can offer the good infomation in the area, especially restaurants."
"Wonderful hotel in the center of Venezia. 5 min from the Rialto & St. Marco. Very good employees always smiling and profesional. The interior of the hotel is magnificent. Beautiful furnitures in the pure venezian style. The only bad point was maybe the noise level in the room. Our junior suite had a courtyard view so there was absolutely no noise from the street, the walls seems to be quite thin so we were a little bit disturbed by the made by the other residents of the hotel. But our stay was nevertheless wonderful and i can only recomend the hotel Antico Doge."
"Considering that this is Venice, the hotel was wonderful. The staff were extremely nice and gracious. We especially love the location! The hotel is only about 2 minutes from the Rialto Bridge and 10 minute walk to Piazza San Marco. My only complaint is the small bathroom. Luckily, my husband and I are not big people otherwise, the bathroom would have been a problem. Also, the picture of the room on the website was not at all the room we had. Our room was much smaller... but nicely decorated in the Venecian style and clean. We would recommend this hotel to friends and family for the location alone."
