Nice, French Riviera attractions

The French Riviera, or Cote d'Azur (Blue Coast) to use its French name, is again the fashionable hot spot of the rich and famous, chosen by celebrities like Robbie Williams, Donatella Versace, Kate Moss. It was originally the haunt of the English aristocracy, as remembered in names like that of Nice's world-famous seafront, the Promenade des Anglais.

Provence, the region in the south of France, on the border with Italy, where the Cote d'Azur is located, is one of the most beautiful in France, not only for its coast and fashionable beaches, but also for its hilly countryside, dotted with ancient villages, which has inspired many artists, from Picasso to Cezanne to Peter Mayle.
Other attractions in the district are the perfumeries of Eze and Grasse, and the beach towns of St. Tropez and Cannes.

The French Riviera, and Nice in particular, have many major art connections.
In Nice is the Chagall Museum. In Cimiez, a green suburb of Nice on a hill overlooking the city, there is the Matisse Museum, a Genoese villa from the 1600s that contains the great painter's collection.
Vence, a hillside town in Provence just half an hour from Nice, is home to Matisse's Rosary Chapel, while the great impressionist painter Renoir's house is in Cagnes sur Mer.
Obviously important is the Picasso Museum in Antibes, next door to Nice, hosted in Chateau Grimaldi, a seafront citadel going back to the 1300s.

Nice's leafy suburb of Cimiez is also the site of an important jazz festival.
On an open stage in a park under pine trees, in the ancient Roman gardens and arena in Cimiez, above Nice, overlooking the Mediterranean, top class Jazz, Fusion, Latin, Progressive, Pop and Blues music is performed.
This year the dates of Nice Jazz Festival are July 22-29 2003.
